golf nearest point of relief?
If your ball lies exactly in the middle of a cart path or some other obstruction where you get a free relief, is the nearest point of relief defined differently depending on whether you are left handed or right handed?
YES IT DOES. Many people think nearest relief is the nearest place you can get a good lie. That’s a lie.
Here’s the situation. The nearest point of releif is not where you stand. It’s where the ball will have relief. On a cartpath if you take relief, you must take COMPLETE relief. That means you can’t stand on the path when you hit.
I’ll give an example assuming you are right handed, behind the ball, looking at the hole, and in the middle of the cart path. If you drop to the left side you will have to move your ball 2-3 feet for you to get legal relief. If you drop the ball on the right side of the path then you move your ball 2-3 feet PLUS the amount needed to get your feet (stance) off the path so you may have to move the ball 6-7 feet. The key is NEAREST. Is it nearer 2-3 feet or 6-7 feet. It also doesn’t matter which side of the cartpath the fairway is on. OR if there are bushes, rocks, or other bad things in the area you will have to drop. BUT you can hit the ball off the cart path. You don’t have to take a drop it the drop will result in a very bad lie. Make sure you figure out where you have to drop before you pick up the ball.
